【Mandarin has been made compulsory at schools in the town of São João da Madeira】
Chinese learning craze is sweeping in many parts of the world. São João da Madeira - a small industrial town in the north of Portugal, the country''s shoe capital which specialises in luxury footwear - has now made Mandarin Chinese compulsory for children aged 8 and 9!
São João da Madeira
The aim is to give their youth the competitive tool to help sell their products to China - the world's biggest market. The government is observing the new policy closely to see if it can be implemented throughout the country.
Will Chinese language one day become the second or third most used language in Portugal (just as Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States)? :-)
